Geostud gets involved in innovation and decarbonation actions in the Danube Delta

Geostud representatives participated in Tulcea on 05-07 September 2022 in “Stakeholders engagement in Innovation Actions related to Deltas & Wetlands”, a 2-day regional event (Romania – Bulgaria – Moldova – Ukraine) in the framework of the 3D Initiative on Stakeholder Engagement in Innovation Actions related to Deltas and Wetlands.

The 3D Initiative (“Decarbonizing Danube Delta”) was born as a result of the collaboration of several partners from different categories, such as: research organisations, academia, SMEs, NGOs, local administration, all following the same mission of decarbonizing the Danube Delta, also taking into account the needs of local communities.

The working group proposes an approach based on local solutions, supporting the principles set out through the European Green Pact.
The event brought together environmental specialists and researchers recognised both in the country and abroad, such as Prof. Dr. Delia Dimitriu (University of Manchester, UK); Dr. Ing. Iulian Nichersu (National Research and Development Institute “Danube Delta”, Tulcea); Senior Expert Roberta Zobbi (DG MARE – Maritime Policy – Research and Innovation).

During the three sessions of the meeting entitled “Mapping Regional Stakeholders”, “Objectives of the Mission Restore Ocean and Waters” and “Engaging with Communities”, Geostud representatives, together with those of INCDDD, members of the 3D initiative and local municipalities from Tulcea, Silistra – Bulgaria and Giurgiulesti Port (TBD) – Moldova, presented their proposals and initiatives on the topics addressed.

Discussions focused on actions to reduce environmental impacts, identify local renewable energy resources for local energy independence, protect biodiversity and nature conservation, monitor anthropogenic impacts, create jobs for local communities and green tourism in the area.

GEOSTUD, being part of the initiative group 3D – Decarbonisation of the Danube Delta, joined the debates at the event and raised the alarm on the impact of climate change on the biodiversity components of the Danube Delta, coming up with proposals to mitigate these changes and reduce the carbon footprint in several sectors by accelerating the implementation of circular economy principles.
